Port St Mary
Close neighbour of Port Erin this pretty village has the impressive backdrop of the Mull Peninsula with its steep slopes and fields rolling right down into the streets and harbour itself. Now no longer quite as busy with the fishing fleet, it is an ideal haven for fine yachts and leisure vessels and is a very popular port of call for tourists and locals alike.
Port St Mary is the English form of the Gaelic Keill Moirrey, more commonly referred to as Purt-le-Moirrey. Clustered around the harbour are old Manx cottages - thatched roofs having long ago given way to Manx slate - transporting the visitor back in time to a more relaxed way of life. The newer part of Port St Mary lies above the sandy beaches of Chapel Bay where generations of children have learned to swim and to build their first sand castles. Linking the harbour and bay is a fine walkway winding its way close to the waters edge.
