Kirk Michael Dragon Cross 117[89]

This late Norse period cross-slab was recorded by William Kinnebrook in 1841 as standing near Bishop Wilson's tomb in the north of Kirk Michael churchyard. It measures around 54 inches in length by 22 inches in width. The bottom portion has been broken off.

Mrs Richards describes it as -

"..a very spectacular cross, named obviously for the four beautifully interlaced dragons, two on each side of this double sided slab. The faces of the cross have two different interlaced patterns. The circles of each head have plaits of seven and four. There are no Runes so it is not known to whom it was erected. From the quality of the carving it was seemingly some person of importance".

Kirk Michael has a fragment of another dragon cross, 116[90]. This measures about 15 by 9 inches. It was almost certainly sculpted by the same craftsman who carved the cross-slab illustrated here.
