The Kirk Braddan cross is very interesting, possibly depicting Daniel in the lions’ den on the upper panel. This is only the second cross that depicts a Biblical subject, the first being the Calf of Man Crucifixion.

The cross is four feet four inches in height and the width, across the head of the cross, is three feet two inches. It is similar in style to the Kirk Lonan Cross.

The remainder of the equal-limbed cross is decorated with very fine plaitwork. The outer circles are also covered by plaits of three, four and six, respectively.

It is difficult to determine the significance of the animals depicted between the plaits. They could be animals from the Old Testament or just copies of animals from Celtic mythology, similar to those in the Book of Kells and the Lindisfarne Gospels.

Whatever they were intended to represent, they make a very interesting addition to a magnificent
cross.
