Office of Fair Trading: Introduction

Office of Fair Trading

The Isle of Man Office of Fair Trading is a Statutory Board of the Isle of Man Government that provides the appropriate legislation, advice, and compliance services to benefit and protect consumers and businesses from unfair trading practises.

They are committed to providing a wide range of services to meet statutory obligations. Legislation, promoted by the Office of Fair Trading is intended to protect the consumer and ensure a fair trading arena for all businesses.  Their work is underpinned by both criminal and civil legislation, while the Office of Fair Trading lead officers are professional trading standards officers qualified to deal with all the aspects of criminal legislation.

As part of the UK trading standards organisation, the Isle of Man Office of Fair Trading benefit from close co-operation with other Trading Standards offices to resolve disputes involving UK companies.  They also work with other consumer organisations across Europe to resolve wider ranging complaints.

In conjunction with the Island's Financial Supervision Commission and the Insurance and Pensions Authority, the Office of Fair Trading launched the Financial Services Ombudsman Scheme in January 2002, which is a free, independent dispute resolution service for customers with a complaint against an Isle of Man financial firm in the areas of banking, insurance, investment and pensions.
