Former Olympic champion Adrian Moorhouse MBE shared his insights into sporting success last Thursday evening (22nd October) when he gave an after-dinner speech to the Isle of Man Swimming Association.

The annual dinner, which took place at the Hilton Hotel, was well attended by approximately 150 competitive swimmers past and present, plus coaches, families and sponsors.

After his triumph in the 1988 Seoul Games, Adrian Moorhouse went on to find success as a BBC sports commentator and businessman.

He is now the Managing Director of Lane4, a professional services firm focused on organisational performance, leadership development and executive coaching.

In a humorous, down-to-earth speech, Mr Moorhouse shared his journey to the Olympics and the setbacks he encountered on the way.

One of the most memorable pieces of advice he gave to the audience was to learn not just how to aim for success but 'how to manage your failure'.

Describing the way in which his passion for swimming transformed him from an unhappy, awkward child into a confident adult, he spoke convincingly of the rewards and benefits that swimming can have, not only on the young but on people throughout their lives.

Echoing these sentiments, the Chairman of the IOMSA, Clive Parrish, gave a heartfelt talk in which he also detailed the Island's fantastic swimming achievements and thanked everyone involved in the sport at a local level for their enduring commitment and support.

The day saw a packed schedule for Mr Moorhouse: in the afternoon, he led a workshop entitled 'Swimming to Success in Business' at the Sefton Hotel.  This successful event was organised by the Isle of Man branch of the Institute of Directors, who also supported the IOMSA dinner in the evening.
