Cervical cancer vaccine to be given out

Cervical cancer jabs are being given out from Monday (March 15) with girls at QEII High School in Peel the first to receive them.

The HPV vaccine will be available to all girls aged 12 to 17 on the Island.

Director of Public Health Dr Parameswaran Kishore says it's important as many girls as possible get the injection, as it helps prevent a potentially fatal cancer.

He warns: 'In developing nations there are a large number of deaths from diseases such as diphtheria and polio because a combination of ignorance and misinformation has led to parents not getting their children vaccinated.

'We do not want a similar situation to arise in the Isle of Man with regard to HPV.'

Girls at the rest of the Island's high schools will have the chance to get the jab before the end of this month.
