If you’re entering the Manx Telecom Parish Walk there’s an ideal opportunity to get advice from previous winners at a ‘Walk Talk’ event being held at the Manx Museum. Four-time champion Jock Waddington is the special guest and will be joined by other elite competitors and coaches. Jock will talk about his experiences which began by taking part in the Parish Walk just with an ambition to finish the full distance. But he progressed rapidly from a novice race walker to a champion, recording the second fastest time in the event’s history on his way to winning the event four years in succession between 2008 and 2011. The Walk Talk is open to the public and takes place on Tuesday March 27.
The Manx Museum will open its doors at 5pm with the talk starting at 5.30pm. Spaces are limited so they will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Jock Waddington will be joined by 2011 women’s Parish Walk champion Maureen Moffatt, Manx Telecom Parish Walk Chief Judge Steve Taylor who will also be Chief Judge in race walking events at the 2012 London Olympics, and race walking coach Allan Callow.
Manx Telecom Parish Walk Race Director Ray Cox will also be at the Walk Talk. He said:
“The Walk Talk is a great opportunity for participants at all levels to get the very best advice from experienced competitors and coaches. Whatever your goals - whether it’s to get to Peel or to complete the full 85-miles - the Walk Talk is the best place to get tips on everything from how to train, to choice of equipment, food to eat during the event, choice of footwear, and how to deal with blisters.”
Mike Dee, Manx Telecom CEO, added:
“With only three months to go before the Manx Telecom Parish Walk on June 23 the Walk Talk is ideally timed for all entrants to pick up some useful tips which will help them in training and on the big day. We would like to thank Jock and all of the other guests for attending the Walk Talk, and the Manx Museum for their assistance. It promises to be an interesting and fun evening.”
So far almost 900 walkers have entered the Manx Telecom Parish Walk and organisers are hoping to smash the 2011 total of 1,753 entrants, which is the current record. This year’s Manx Telecom Parish Walk also features a team event and a new Corporate Challenge category.
All entrants must enter as individuals, and those wishing to take part in team or Corporate Challenge events must also add their team name. Entrants for all categories in the Manx Telecom Parish Walk have until one minute to midnight on Sunday May 13 to register. However, all those who enter before midnight on April 8 will be included in a prize draw to win a Sony Ericsson Xperia Active smartphone from Manx Telecom. There are also three prizes provided by Intersport in association with Asics - a pair of trainers, a waterproof jacket, and a tee-shirt.
