Dog owners reminded not to leave their pets in vehicles

Police are reminding dog owners not to leave their pets in vehicles in the warm weather.

Yesterday officers were called to reports of a dog which had been left in a van in Douglas.

They say the officer who attended determined the dog was not distressed and was asleep.

In a post on Facebook the Isle of Man Constabulary said: "Based on the condition of the dog it was thought that smashing the window would cause more distress than waiting for a period of time for the owner to return."

The police officer is said to have given the owner ‘suitable advice’ on their return.

The spokesperson added: "Although this was a good conclusion please don’t leave dogs in vehicles unless they are adequately cooled and ventilated.

"If we have to break a window to keep a dog safe we will do."
