Fast Track to Race Fever
Introduction
In some ways, motorsport on the Isle of Man needs no introduction. In large part, that’s due to the TT, without a doubt the world’s most famous road race and responsible for the Island’s reputation as a hotspot for lovers of fast engines and hair-raising spectacles. The TT, however, is only the tip of the iceberg – whether four wheels or two wheels are what drive you, for most of the year you will find a way to get your motor running!
The TT Races (May/June)
See our dedicated section for a comprehensive guide to the TT, from its humble roots to the world famous festival it is today. From the legendary riders to the lap records, all the facts and figures you could wish for are here.
Manx Grand Prix (August)
Traditionally taking place at the end of August/beginning of September, the Manx Grand Prix is the quieter, more relaxed cousin of the TT. Held on the same 37.73 mile ‘Mountain’ circuit, it consists of four-lap races in separate classes: Newcomers’, Lightweight/Ultra Lightweight, Junior Class and Senior Class, plus the Junior/Lightweight and Senior Classic races, which feature older bikes and draw fans of classic machines. The MGP, which is organised by the Manx Motorcycle Club, began life in 1923 as the ‘Manx Amateur Road Races’ before being renamed the Manx Grand Prix in 1930. It has historically been a good platform for talented riders to test their mettle before competing in the TT and other major events. As with the TT, there are plenty of supporting attractions:- vintage rallies, club meetings, beach racing, to name a few – and a popular Classic Parade around the course.
Billown Circuit
Pre TT Classic (May)
The Pre TT Classic is one of three annual races (see Southern 100 and Steam Packet Co. National Races, below) held on the 4.25 mile Billown Circuit, outside Castletown in the south of the Island. Started in 1988, the race takes place over four days at the end of May, immediately prior to the start of TT practice week.
Steam Packet Co. National Races (June)
Short, sweet and nothing less than thrilling, the Steam Packet Co. National Races arrive on the tail-end of the TT and make a fantastic finish to the fortnight. There are four races for four different bike classes: 125cc, 250cc, 600cc and 1000cc.
Southern 100 Road Races (July)
For those suffering serious TT withdrawal symptoms, the Southern 100 arrives in the nick of time! The Southern 100 first took place in 1955. Held in July on the Billown Circuit, it consists of mass start solo, sidecar and classic bike racing.
Jurby South National Road Races (July)
Like the Billown races, these take place on a 4.25 mile circuit and, as they are staged shortly after the Southern 100, many of the first class riders (and avid fans) stay on for this event.
Trials Bikes
Manx National 2 Day Trial (August)
Often described as the best event of its kind in Europe, the Manx National 2 Day Trial has solo and sidecar races for riders of all calibre, from the most experienced to newcomers. With courses covering up to 68 miles of countryside, this event sets the standard for off-road challenges.
Manx Classic Weekend Trial (September)
This event attracts up to 180 competitors – both local and international – who are drawn by the prospect of a unique off-road endeavour through spectacular, rugged scenery. The Manx Classic is specifically for pre-1965 machines, making at an absolute must for fans of classic bikes.
Rallies (Bike)
VMCC Manx Rally (August)
A hugely enjoyable mixture of ride-outs, parades and social events, the VMCC has been going strong for over thirty five years. Much-loved classic bikes throng the roads, bringing to life no less than the history of motorcycling. And where better than on the Isle of Man, the spiritual home of bike lovers from all over the world?
Rallies (Car)
RBS International Rally (May)
The RBS International Rally gives Rally Isle of Man (see below) a serious run for its money as the most exciting motoring spectacle on the calendar. Covering over 120 stage miles on the Island’s demanding public roads, the Rally attracts well over highly-skilled 100 entrants, making it a hotly-contested and memorable event.
Rally Isle of Man (July)
Another motoring event with an excellent reputation as one of the fastest and most demanding rallies in Europe. In 2007, the three-day epic won the coveted title of the Best Rally in the British Isles from Motorsport News. Incorporating the Isle of Man International, the Historic, the Stars and the Trophy Rally, the event is also a pivotal part of the British and Irish Rally Championships, and brings some of the world’s best and most exciting competitors to Manx shores.
