Manufacturing Introduction
The Isle of Man’s manufacturing sector covers an extremely wide range of thriving industries: electronics, precision engineering, laser optics, plastics and ship-building, to name but a few examples.
The Island has a history of innovation in industry, from mining to aerospace, and for many years, has been at the cutting edge of manufacturing technology.
This is reflected in the fact that an estimated 3,000 people on the Island are now employed in manufacturing/engineering and this sector represents 7% of annual GDP.
As with other growth sectors on the Island – for instance, the e-gaming industry – the success of manufacturing is founded on a number of characteristics which put the Island in an excellent position. A world-class telecommunications and IT infrastructure, skilled workforce and favourable tax regime combine with consistently strong co-operation between the Government and private sector.
There is, furthermore, a strong network of communication between key businesses which helps to raise awareness and foster initiatives.
