Energy & Water

The Isle of Man has not, at the present time, discovered indigenous sources of coal, gas or oil and therefore depends on imports to supply its energy demands. Electricity, which is AC and supplied at 240 volts, is generated and distributed by the Manx Electricity Authority (MEA) from its three power stations in Douglas, Peel and Ramsey and a small hydro-electric power station in Sulby. Gas is supplied by Douglas Gas PLC and Calor Manx Gas Limited. Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG)/Air is supplied by mains in the Island's main urban areas, whilst rural areas are served by LPG-derived gas. Water is the responsibility of the Isle of Man Water Authority, which oversees the two main reservoirs at West Baldwin and Sulby.

Residency

Population projections show the importance of immigration to the Isle of Man. The present structure is such that without an influx of new residents there would be a decline in the overall population. Official policy is to target areas in which growth is required whilst carefully monitoring and ensuring it is compatible with the Manx community. This policy is vital for reasons other than just the prevention of a net population decline.

Social Welfare

As with other aspects of its welfare provision, the Island's social security system is similar to that of the United Kingdom. Reciprocity in social security arrangements between the Island and the UK has been the Isle of Man Government policy for years. There are, however, certain exceptions to allow for the Island's unique circumstances and, in recent years, the Manx Department of Health and Social Security has become less strict in its alignment with decisions taken in the United Kingdom.

Health Service

The Isle of Man Government's commitment to a comprehensive National Health Service is an integral part of its policy to develop a prosperous and caring society. Health takes a high priority in Government expenditure plans, a fact which is reflected in the quality and extent of services. The Manx NHS comes under the control of the island's own Department of Health and Social Security, which provides a range of services, from hospitals and specialists to district nursing, similar to those provided by authorities in the United Kingdom.

Education & Training

A combination of the best in traditional and modern approaches to teaching and learning continues to ensure high standards throughout the Manx educational system.

The Island has its own Department of Education, but the general framework for schools and for education is similar to England and Wales. Manx schools are introducing and following the National Curriculum, using as a base the English National Curriculum but adapted to reflect the policies of the Department.

History & Culture

The Isle of Man is looking ahead with confidence to this new century, but it looks back with pride on a distinctive heritage. Today, Manx culture is carefully safeguarded as a vital component of the Island's individual character, and there is increased emphasis on the work of such institutions as Manx National Heritage, an organization unique in the British Isles, protecting, presenting and promoting all aspects of the Manx cultural and natural heritage.

Quality of Life

It is difficult to encapsulate and quantify the relaxed and peaceful way of life in the Isle of Man, with its untroubled atmosphere and friendly residents. Whilst offering all the services and facilities of a modern European centre, the Island also boasts a fine selection of restaurants, shopping and leisure facilities. Yet away from the busy commercial centres, the Island has retained a pace of life which is the envy of most urban dwellers.
