UK little or no help over Kaupthing - Bell

The Isle of Man is largely fighting its own battles when it comes to helping KSF depositors, according to Treasury Minister Allan Bell, despite a report calling for authorities in the Island and the United Kingdom to work together.

Depositors have seized on the findings in the UK Treasury Select Committee report, published last month, which examines the impact of the Icelandic banking crisis.

But, in calling for clearer lines of communication, Mr Bell admits help to secure savings has not been forthcoming from the UK government.

He told Manx Radio:

"The Isle of Man is on its own on this.

"The UK government has given nominal support in the sense that they have offered to discuss the position with the Icelandic government - because of our constitutional position we can't do it directly.

"That has been of very limited benefit. The chief minister and myself have been to Iceland, instead of that, to talk to the Resolution Committee - the committee which is manaaging Kaupthing there [and] that has been a more effective line of communications.

"We've had very little help from the UK government and the solution, whatever final shape it takes over the next few weeks, to this whole sorry affair, has been constructed and funded entirely from the Isle of Man."

Mr. Bell is avoiding the point. He has not asked for assistance. Why, why, why will he not ask the UK for help? The IOM is the only western territory not giving 100% support to depositors. With UK assistance this could be achieved and the whole problem solved. Better for the IOM and better for the depositors.

Sir, You report today that "The Isle of Man is largely fighting its own battles when it comes to helping KSF depositors". This seems to be true, but the question is why. WHY does Mr Bell insist on going it alone? WHY does he appear unwilling to seek the assistance of HMG in resolving this matter, particularly in view of the recommendations of the recent Treasury Select Committee report? Depositors have been directly informed by one of the members of the TSC, no less, that he and several other UK MPs are ready and willing to bring pressure to bear on the UK government, but can do nothing unless asked by the Isle of Man government. Could it be that they are too proud to turn to big brother? How does he think that feels to depositors whose lives have been put on hold for 6 months already and who face the prospect of maybe getting 70% of their life savings back over the next 6 years? Or does he just feel it's tough luck for being so foolish as to put their savings in an IoM bank. Sincerely, anrigaut (KSFIOM depositor)

Sir, I do believe Mr Bell had failed to approach the right people in the UK, and certainly not since the announcement made by the TSC on this aspect of the financial crisis. Chancellor Darling is on record as saying that he believed that the IoM authorities had not approached the UK Govt. to discuss a loan for providing reimbursement to the depositors, and Mr Mark Todd has recently indicated that he and other UK MPs are standing by to assist the IoMG to bring pressure on the UK Govt. to assist to help - if they were asked. So who is being reticent Mr Bell? Are you and Mr Brown so insistent upon the IoM doing this alone, that you would rather see the depositors wait for 6 years or more to get back 30% less than their life savings? What a damning indictment of this petty Governance! Shame upon you all; and what shame you bring upon the islanders who live under your cheapskate behaviour. Ice

This from Alan Bell totally contradicts a letter from Mark Todd to a depositor of KSFIOM last week (30th April)! Quote: "Dear XXX There is a large difficulty here. The Isle of Man is clearly sovereign in this matter (as the report indicates). It must be for their government to seek assistance. If they could be persuaded to make an approach to the UK I am sure that I, and other MPs, could assist in pressing for assistance to be given. However it seems (so far) that they do not wish to ask. Mark There are other indications the UK Trreasury are willing to help out the Isle of Man. But the UK have simply not received any request from the IOM for that help!! WHY CAN'T ALAN PICK UP THE PHONE AND TALK TO LONDON? WOULDN'T THINGS BE SO MUCH EASIER FOR EVERYONE THEN?
