Plea not to import horses during equine flu outbreak

Horse owners are being urged not to import horses to the Isle of Man due to an outbreak of equine influenza in the UK.

Government says it’s asking for the 'cooperation' of local owners saying if horses are imported increased biosecurity will be needed.

Chief Veterinary Officer Alistair Breed says: "Import licenses now contain an additional requirement that is to isolate horses for two weeks following importation.

"This covers the incubation period and will enable detection of the disease should it occur and further isolation to contain the disease.

"I will continue to closely monitor the situation and advise DEFA on appropriate actions to take if and when necessary."
