Heritage

Castle and forts, churches and keeils, the Island's heritage is varied with plenty to interest the visitor.

The Isle of Man is full of old churches, medieval castles, coastal forts, Celtic and Viking stone crosses and ancient burial grounds. Many of the sites date back centuries.  Not surprising then that the Story of Mann covers 10,000 years of Manx history.

  • CastlesandForts2.jpg Castles & Forts Castle Rushen and Peel Castle are well known but the Island is home to many other forts.
  • ChurchesKeeils1.jpg Churches & Keeils Part of the Isle of Man's rich heritage - from parish churches which perform an important role in Island life to derelict keeils in the countryside.
  • LaxeyWheel6.jpg Laxey Wheel A visit to Laxey Wheel should not be missed. This historically important site is in the care of Manx National Heritage and forms part of the Story of Mann.
  • ManxMines.jpg Mines Once an important industry on the Isle of Man, deposits of zinc ore and lead were mined at places such as Laxey and Foxdale.
  • Museums3(Cregneash).jpg Museums Interested in the history of Mann? You'll find a visit to the Manx Museum in Douglas or any of Manx National Heritage's sites around the Island will be a fascinating experience.
  • StoneCrosses1.jpg Stone Crosses Many of the Island's churchyards house displays of ancient stone crosses found within the parishes.
  • Meayll Circle Burial Sites The Island still has traces of its early inhabitants, in the form of burial sites from the Neolithic and Megalithic eras.
