Castles & Forts

Castle Rushen and Peel Castle are well known but the Island is home to many other forts.

Castle Rushen, in the ancient capital of Mann is a magnificently restored castle used as a museum as part of the Story of Mann.  In its time, the castle would have protected the entrance to the island up the Silverburn River.

Peel Castle, the only one on the Island to be made of sandstone, sits just off the coast of Peel, joined only by a causeway.

With the number of hills on the island, hill forts were popular in the past for defending the shores as they provided excellent vantage points.

Derby Fort on St Michael's Isle, was used to protect the bay of Derbyhaven lying between the Langness peninsula and the southeastern coast of the Island.
