Castle Rushen

Dave Hattersley

The Best of Me... Dave Hattersley is a youth officer for the Department of Children and Education. He organises 'Soundcheck' at the Castle - helping teenage musicians to get started.

He has lived on the Island for 14 years, but first came to the TT in 1977. Born in Shipley, Yorkshire, Dave started working life as a chef before becoming a youth officer for Department of Education and Children. He has eight children with wife Ginette, ranging from 12 to 40-years-old.

Best meal (cooked by you or by another):

Looking at the size of me, I love food and cooking. My favourite meals are fish n' chips, rib eye steak and a traditional Sunday roast. Also my mum's rice pudding with a burnt skin (and not forgetting her trifle and my mother in law's banana cake).

Best outfit or single piece of clothing:

I'm not a clothes person and have to wear a shirt and tie at work - but I would wear my shorts and a t-shirt all day forever if I could (even in winter)!

Best memory:

This is a hard choice. I have had some great holidays all round the world, and seeing the kids born and their excitement on Christmas morning etc. Also watching some live bands such as David Bowie and Yes.

Best way to spend the day:

Doing nothing, setting off on holiday or at a Soundcheck gig (seeing all that young talent never ceases to amaze me).

Best advice:

Never give up, and you learn by your mistakes.

Best place in the Isle of Man:

There are too many - I love Port Erin, Castletown and Peel. Also the view across the bay as you drive down Fisher's Hill (it was my Dad's favourite too).

The Best of Me feature first appears in the Manx Advertiser.
