Disability Gymnastics

by isleofman.com 20th April 2011
Manx Sport and Recreation, in conjunction with the Island’s Special Educational Needs (SEN) Units and Ellan Vannin Gymnastics Club, is now facilitating a series of Disability Gymnastics sessions to both primary and secondary students with learning and/or physical disabilities. Through the generous support of Barclays Wealth and Isle of Man Sport, Ellan Vannin Gymnastic Club will be facilitating six consecutive weeks of disability gymnastic sessions to over 60 children in both primary and secondary SEN Units. These weekly gymnastic sessions will help provide children with many physical, cognitive and psychological benefits. The skills children can obtain and develop through participating in gymnastics will continue to benefit them throughout their lives. Gymnastics contributes to the development of physical and motor skills. It can help improve strength, endurance, agility, balance, flexibility, power and co-ordination. In particular, it is said that the bouncing nature of trampolining and jumping is particularly therapeutic for children on the autistic spectrum. Research suggests participating in movement education can help to improve attention spans and self esteem. It can help to promote continued participation in physical activity. If children enjoy these sessions and would like to continue with gymnastics in the future, they can now become a member of Ellan Vannin Gymnastics Club and attend weekly gymnastic sessions. Hon David Cretney MHK, Minister for Community, Culture and Leisure commented: ‘It is important that children of all ages and abilities take part in physical exercise and this is a great initiative for children to participate in. The physical and psychological benefits that can be obtained by these weekly gymnastic sessions can encourage children to continue with sport in their future lives. Gymnastics is a great sport to encourage and engage children in a healthy lifestyle.’ These sessions will take place at the Ellan Vannin Gymnastic Centre from April - July.
