Jonathan Cregeen finished fourth on general classification at the Junior Tour of Wales last weekend. The five stage race was also the strongest performance of the season so far for Team Microgaming Isle of Man’s junior squad as the four man team provided solid support for Cregeen.
The Microgaming team in Wales was Cregeen, Warwick Sanderson, Thomas Mazzone and Alex Haddock, who was back in action after recovering from injury. The race began with a 7.2km hilly time-trial and Cregeen was Team Microgaming’s best placed rider in 40th position. Cregeen was fourth on the 72.4km stage two and moved up to fourth on GC. Mazzone was the first Microgaming rider home when he finished eighth on the stage 3 circuit race. Cregeen was 31st which meant he held on to his fourth place on GC.
Stage 4 was a 91.8km race around Abergavenny and raced at speeds averaging 25mph up to the bottom of the final climb. Sanderson and Mazzone worked hard to keep Cregeen in contention and he finished 11th with Mazzone two places behind. Cregeen moved up to third on GC. The fifth and final stage covered 100km and finished on top of The Tumble - one of the hardest climbs used in British road racing and a climb which has featured in many professional races. Cregeen was 13th on the stage which earned him fourth place on GC, 1min 06secs behind race winner Brennan Townshend of Team Southwest. Mazzone was 32nd on GC, Sanderson 51st and Haddock 81st. The Junior Tour of Wales was the final event in the British Junior Road Race Series and ideal preparation for the Microgaming junior riders who will represent the Isle of Man at the Commonwealth Youth Games in September.
Microgaming has been the title sponsor of the Isle of Man national cycling team since 2008. This season the team is also supported by Eurocars which has supplied a team car for the squad.
