Lewis Chessmen and Chronicles at Manx Museum

by isleofman.com 10th November 2012

A remarkable exhibition, bringing together the most ancient and famous historical account of the Island with legendary chess pieces has opened at the Manx Museum.

A number of the "Lewis Chessmen", - figures carved from walrus tusk and whale tooth and discovered on that Scottish island - have been paired with the "Chronicles of the Kings of Mann and the Isles", a medieval history book.

They have been lent by the British Museum.

Last night the exhibition was opened at the Manx Museum by Speaker of the Keys, Steve Rodan.

Among those examining the chess pieces, one of which is a Bishop, was our own Lord Bishop!

The exhibition runs until March
