YOUNG readers are being encouraged to sign up for this year's Family Library summer reading scheme.
The scheme, in its fifth year, is created by the Department of Education and Children and is designed as a way of keeping young library members entertained through the school summer holidays.
Mary Cousins, librarian in charge, said: "The theme is always a closely guarded secret until the launch and this keeps members and parents guessing for the few weeks of registration.
"Members read a minimum of five books and take part in a game that lasts all summer long – with puzzles and crafts. This year the theme is an adventure that will keep young people busy all summer with fun activities."
The summer reading scheme is open to all library members aged five and over. Children who complete the challenge will receive a certificate and those who complete the game will receive a special treat and could win a prize. Under fives can take part in activities via the library's Junior Reading Club.
Library members have until Saturday, June 25 to register for the scheme which will be launched a week later on July 2.
It costs £2 for children to join the Family Library for a year. For more information visit www.familylibrary.co.uk.
