Island schoolgirl crowned Ice Factor Champion

A 14 YEAR old from Douglas has been crowned the Ice Factor Champion after wowing judges with her skating skills in the final of an ice skating competition.

Elizaveta Tamarova was crowned the winner of the Sure Skate ice skating competition at the final which took place in the Villa Marina Gardens yesterday.

Hundreds of spectators watched as she performed a routine to the Pink Panther music before being crowned winner.

Elizaveta won a pair of brand new ice skates signed by former England rugby player and Dancing on Ice star Kyran Bracken.

She said: "I didn't expect to win. I am so excited. I've only been ice skating since the Sure Skate rink has been on the Isle of Man. I could always stand up on the ice but I didn't start properly learning to skate until the summer skate school with Karen Barber. Competing in the Ice Factor was lots of fun. I'm glad I did it."

The finalists were initially chosen by Kyran Bracken in November and were given golden passes enabling them to practice on the ice as much as they wanted. The final of the competition was judged by Kate Hegarty from Sure, the rink manager Scott Goodall and Judith Ley from Manx Radio.

Kate Hegarty, marketing manager at Sure said: "It was a great turnout and all of the finalists performed really well which made the final decision extremely difficult. Sure Skate has been very successful again this year and Ice Factor added a special element to the season. We would like to congratulate all of the contestants and thank them for taking part. See you next winter."

Sure Skate is open until Sunday, January 9.
