'Debt of gratitude' to Illiam Dhone

by isleofman.com 1st January 2011

One of the speakers at Sunday's nationalist ceremony at Hango Hill, Castletown says the Isle of Man owes a debt of gratitude to the man who preserved its independance.

Mec Vannin Chairman Mark Kermode says that's why people need to commemorate Illiam Dhone, or William Christian.

A large crowd is expected for the 32nd such ceremony which will see an oration in Manx Gaelic by Mr Kermode, followed by one in English from Minister for Infrastructure Phil Gawne.

Mr Kermode says that when called upon Illiam Dhone acted for the Island knowing it would almost certainly result in his death.

He's unsure how many people would go to such lengths for their country today (play audio file):

The ceremony at Hango Hill is at 2pm and will be followed by the traditional service at Malew parsih church, at 2.45pm.
