Gritters keep the roads open

by isleofman.com 22nd December 2009

The scale of the task undertaken by gritting teams at the weekend is revealed in statistics issued by the Department of Transport.

In the 48 hours from 8am on Saturday, they gritted around 1,400 miles of the Island's highway network, using 240 tonnes of road salt.

The teams worked around the clock, in eight hours shifts, and the department's control room at the Ellerslie Depot in Crosby was permanently manned from Saturday morning until 3pm on Sunday.

During that time, staff dealt with many calls from the emergency services and members of the public, asking for assistance.

Transport officials are paying tribute to their hard work and commitment.
