Crucial meeting on stadium later

Crunch talks between the government and Douglas Borough Council over the future of the Bowl this evening could lead to the proposed ?3.4 million refurbishment scheme going ahead after all.

The local authority insists it can't justify spending ?1.7 million in the current economic climate, and it looks as if the government could step in and buy the stadium in order to have it ready for the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games.

The idea was mooted in Tynwald last week, and South Douglas MHK David Cretney says it's an idea he would support if an agreement to share the cost can't be salvaged.

He says it's in the national interest to have a suitable venue for the opening ceremony for such a prestigious event:
