On the first Saturday of the month, senior citizens in the south of the Island were invited to enjoy festive cheer at the annual Christmas party hosted by the staff of King William’s College and the Buchan School.
Members of staff from both King William’s College and the Buchan volunteered as drivers, providing transport for the 75 pensioners from Millhope, Sandfield Sheltered accommodation and Abbotswood Nursing Home, as well as from Castletown and surrounding area, who attended the event.
Guests enjoyed a delicious Christmas Dinner in the Buchan dining room followed by an impressive display of festive entertainment: a virtuoso violin ensemble organised by Head of Music Sue Mills; Christmas songs by former pupil Stephanie Cottier; and more beautiful singing from members of King William’s College Choir under the direction of Poppy Westerman.
Ann Cottier, the Buchan teacher who coordinates this event, commented, "We were delighted to organise this party which, each year, brings such joy to pensioners, pupils and staff alike.
"It is a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to get involved and contribute something back to their local community. This year’s party was a triumphant success, and the event continues to be well supported; already another 20 pensioners want to join the list for next year!
"With numbers continuing to rise, the party may have to be held in the gym next year so as not to disappoint anyone wishing to attend."
Ann Cottier was thanked by the Buchan’s Headteacher, Alison Hope Hedley, as was the Domestic Bursar of King William’s College, Martin Howland, who provided all the lovely food.
