A former road death Investigator is making a plea to members of the public who are complacent about car crime.
Inspector Derek Flint now heads up the Northern Neighbourhood Policing Team, which has been working to bring two vehicle thieves to justice.
Inspector Flint says in too many cases car owners make it very easy for the criminals, by leaving their keys in the ignition.
He says this can have implications from the point of view of insurance, but there can also be far more tragic consequences.
He told Manx Radio:
"If you want to be part of the chain of a tragedy then just keep leaving your keys in the car, because you will have played a major part in the demise of a young person.
"Or look at it another way - that you person in that car may well hit one of your nearest and dearest coming the other way.
"If you want to avoid that just listen to what we are telling you, basic crime prevention advice.
"Take your keys out of your car, lock your car and then put your keys somewhere safe in your house."
Two juveniles appeared in court this week in connection with the theft of cars and have been bailed until November 20.
