Countryside care scheme plans on hold

by isleofman.com 22nd October 2014
A move to make major changes to the Island’s Countryside Care Scheme has been put on hold.
It’s after Tynwald was unable to agree on a series of recommendations proposed by the committee which assessed it.
Although supporters feel elements of the scheme are helping the agriculture industry show signs of stabilisation and growth, opponents say it has many disadvantages.
Last night, a raft of extra recommendations were put forward by Michael member Alfred Cannan which prompted MHKs to call for more consultation with the industry and the wider community.
While that was backed in the House of Keys, members of the Legislative Council opposed it and Tynwald was divided.
Malew and Santon MHK Graham Cregeen - who called for an adjournment to allow consultation – will now ask for a combined vote at next month’s sitting.
