Public consulted over further measures to eradicate cattle disease

by isleofman.com 14th November 2017

The public is being consulted over the introduction of further measures to eradicate a disease that can kill cattle.

Bovine viral diarrhoea is highly contagious and proves costly for the Island’s agriculture industry.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture (DEFA) is working closely with the Manx National Farmers’ Union and the industry to eradicate the disease and the number of farms affected has reduced.

However, 12 farms were newly infected last year and so far three have been newly infected in 2017.

The Department is now seeking views over the introduction of tighter controls on importing and moving cattle, more rigorous testing and enforced removal from farms of animals that are persistently infected.

The consultation can be found and completed at https://consult.gov.im/

Paper copies can be obtained from/replies sent to:

The closing date for responses is 29th December 2017.
