Jacqui Dankworth, British Jazz Singer

Jazz lovers lapped up the stunning performance provided by international stars Jacqui Dankworth and Charlie Wood at the Centenary Centre in Peel last weekend.

Acknowledged as two of the most highly regarded vocalists and musicians in the UK, their spell-binding performance was perfect for an intimate setting such as this, where their stirring programme included an extensive range of classics, interlaced with well-known compositions, stylish interpretation and some fabulous arrangements by Charlie Wood.

They were joined on stage by talented bass guitarist Dudley Phillips, who provided a comforting backdrop to the celebrated couple as they presented an evening of inspirational music, harmony and outstanding versatility.

Jacqui Dankworth is, of course, the daughter of the multi-talented jazz singer Cleo Laine and the late musician Johnny Dankworth, but although primarily recognised as a jazz singer herself, she moves seamlessly amongst a wide range of genres, including folk, soul, classical and blues.

Her Memphis born husband, Charlie Wood, also discovered an early love of music, initially through his local blues and R & B scene, before heading towards New Orleans where he spent several years immersed in piano tradition and the lush lifestyle of the Big Easy. He enjoys a reputation as an accomplished, award-winning and prolific singer/songwriter and as a keyboard player for the legendary blues guitarist Albert King, as well as a recognised and talented arranger.

Their unmistakable rapport enriched the dynamics of the concert, which transferred seamlessly to an audience which eagerly absorbed their outstanding performance.
