Funds totalling ?3,000 were presented to six charities by fire fighters today. The money was raised at Douglas Fire Station’s open day on August 22, which attracted large crowds. The Station’s Welfare Club donated ?1,000 each to Rebecca House Children’s Hospice and the Fire Fighters’ Charity, with a further four charities each receiving ?250, namely the Hyperbaric Chamber, Craig’s Heartstrong Foundation, Help For Heroes and Cancer Research. Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Groom presented the cheques on behalf of the station, assisted by Station Officer Alan Gawne and Leading Fire Fighter Justin McMullin, representing Douglas Fire Station’s Welfare Club, and members from White Watch. He commented: ‘It gives me great pleasure to be able to present the cheques to the various charities selected by Douglas Station’s Welfare Club. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the event, the various organisations and businesses that supported it and above all the community of the Island for attending and supporting it so generously.’ Charity representatives who received the cheques from DCFO Groom included Hyperbaric Chamber nurse Clare Duchars, Frances Bland, team leader at Rebecca House, and Help For Heroes fundraiser Anneka Rae.
