Manx students leaving the Island shortly to take up university courses in Medicine, Dentistry or Pharmacy can obtain help from the Howard Bequest administered through the Isle of Man Medical Research Committee. The bequest was left to help Manx students with the purchase of text books and other expenses, with the current grant being worth up to ?500 to each student. This is a significant help in the current economic climate, and any student who feels that they qualify for the grant should contact Dr Alison Blackman alison.blackman@gov.im
The Isle of Man Medical Research Committee also supports local students through the sponsorship of the ‘Schools Information Day’ held in June each year. On Monday 28th June eighteen Year 12 students from schools across the Island took part in the annual event aimed at those interested in studying medicine, pharmacy or dentistry at university next year.
The day was a mixture of enlightening and practical sessions – including a talk on UCAS applications from Dr Fiona Watson, MBChB Admissions Tutor from the University of Liverpool; how to obtain work experience at Noble’s and a hands-on session in the clinical skills centre involving resuscitation techniques and taking blood pressures.
Comments received included ‘I found it very informative, learnt a lot about what I should expect and was good fun’ and ‘Was even more informative than I expected. Found the day to be very useful’.
The Isle of Man Medical Research Committee thanks everyone involved in making the day such a success.
If you require any further information about the Schools’ Information Day then please contact Mary Clark, Medical Education Manager on 650929 or email mary.clark@gov.im
