PWC Rubies v Ballasalla A
Ballasalla A got their season off to a fantastic start with a convincing 41 -17 victory over the renamed Manx Gem Rubies in the Premier Division.
The first quarter was highly competitive start and the Rubies looked likely to be the first on the scoreboard. However, some strong play from goal defender Ciara Linehan stemmed the flow and allowed Ballasalla to stay in the game and start the scoring off.
After the first break it seemed the Rubies couldn’t keep up with the pace and last year’s league winners dominated play. Rubies keeper Sarah Drewett played did well to keep the goals out despite her height disadvantage against Balla shooter Kate Tebay.
Ballasalla continued to control the game until the end and there was nothing the Rubies could do to stop it.
C&S Joinery C v Fencibles B
C&S Joinery C managed to edge out Fencibles B in a hard fought 29-24 victory despite getting off to a bad start in Division Two.
Fencibles were quick off the mark with goals from Leah Crowe and Emily Kaighen almost immediately.
Joinery C struggled to make an impression on the opposition early on but they finally found form late in the second quarter. Mistakes slowly started to creep in to the Fencibles game and enabled C&S to take advantage. Goal shooter Kira Longshaw put them well ahead going in to the fourth quarter and made the victory seem almost certain.
Fencibles did mount a fight back near the final whistle, but it was in vein as the deficit was too much. C&S had pulled out just a big enough gap to take the win.
Fencibles A v Nobody’s Angels
Fencibles A fared better than their sister team with a solid 26-8 victory over the renamed Nobody’s Angel in Division Two
However, Fencibles didn’t get off to the start they wanted when goal defence Voirrey Acheson fell over near the net. The Angel’s were unable to capitalise and Fencibles were right back in the game.
Beccy Cooper got Fencibles off to a flying start in the second quarter by scoring immediately. They were almost unstoppable but for the good work of Susie Pilling and Voirrey Cheesman; Pilling was back after missing last season. Their good defence forced goal shooter Rachael Jarvis in to making a shot from an awkward angle, but she was able to send the ball over the keeper and down in to the net.
Fencibles will be hoping they can improve on their four victories last season and their fifth place in last year’s league.
C&S Joinery B v Ramsey A
C&S Joinery B dominated their first match of the season in Division One to beat Ramsey A 38-10.
The first quarter was very close, but Ramsey seemed to be dominating the early minutes with goals from Rachel Bailey and Lindsey Woods.
However, C&S upped the pace in the second quarter and started to move ahead. Goal shooter Megan Staples made a great shot to increase their lead despite having Ramsey’s Brigid Cummins defending well.
Ramsey made only one switch during the game at half time; bringing on Claire Fletcher to replace Woods at goal attack. It was too late at this stage and the northern team were unable to catch up with the joiners.
C&S finished second in last year’s league, but they are on their way to moving on step up the table.
