Manx Telecom Continues Community Woodland Project

by isleofman.com 8th October 2010
Manx Telecom staff volunteered to work at the Conrhenny Woodlands Project community woodland project to coincide with the company’s support for the 10/10/10 global environmental initiative. October 10, 2010, is 10 weeks before the world's political leaders meet in Mexico to try and move forward with the United Nation's Framework Convention on Climate Change. The 10/10/10 Campaign originated as an initiative to get individuals, businesses and governments to pledge to reduce their carbon emissions by 10% each year, beginning in 2010. To mark the campaign Manx Telecom staff gave up some of their free time and volunteered to create paths and a picnic area at the plantation. The Conrhenny Woodlands Project was developed as a collaboration between The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture (DEFA) and Manx Telecom. More than 300 trees have already been planted around the perimeter of the site to improve the landscape and benefit the environment. Making sure that there is a trail for wheelchair users to access the picnic area is an important part of the project. The aim is to create a woodland which is accessible to a broad section of the community. A three year commitment has been given to this project by Manx Telecom which is seen as a massive contribution to the Island’s community by its staff. Tony Quayle, Manx Telecom Access Network and Planning Manager, is one of the project co-ordinators. He said: “The project is not just benefitting the environment but also the community. It’s and excellent way to put something back into the Isle of Man community, where staff who participate have some fun and find that it is a great team building exercise.” Earlier this year Manx Telecom won a Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) award for reducing energy consumption and improving efficiency. It won the ‘Best Innovation’ award is one of around 40 Island businesses which now have ‘Energy Champions’ – staff members who are trained to identify ways to reduce energy consumption and improve energy efficiency. - ENDS -
