Britannia International staff volunteered to help create a new cycle path in Douglas at the weekend as part of the company’s support for the 10/10/10 global environmental initiative.
To show support for the campaign Britannia International staff gave up their free time and volunteered to clear vegetation, dig drains and lay and flatten a base course. The Douglas cycle path project was created as a collaboration between Douglas Partnership Scheme, The One World Centre, Friends of the Earth, Transition Isle of Man and Britannia International.
So far vast improvements have been made along the path which runs alongside the Douglas River that will hopefully encourage more people to walk or cycle between Douglas town centre and areas such as Pulrose, Anagh Coar, Farmhill and the NSC. It will also connect with the Heritage Trail to Peel.
Mark Beresford, Britannia International Managing Director commented, “To be involved in this type of project is not just about helping the environment but also our community. It is a great way of encouraging people to take up exercise and see parts of the island that you wouldn’t normally see. It’s also a great way for the Britannia International organisation and staff to give something back to the community, and its fair to say we have had some fun along the way!”
Another work party is planned for 11am Sunday 17 October with an official opening on the 23 October also at 11am.
The 10/10/10 Campaign originated as an initiative to get individuals, businesses and governments to pledge to reduce their carbon emissions by 10% each year, beginning in 2010. On island the day was marked with a series of climate awareness events, which was co-ordinated by the One World Centre and Manx National Heritage.
Earlier this year Britannia International won the Co-op Banks award for ‘Giving something back’ for its efforts and initiatives that staff have undertaken in the local community.
