IOM Squash - Junior Graded Competition

by isleofman.com 18th October 2010
The Skanco Autumn Grading tournament for Junior Squash players took place at the NSC on 17 October. The players were divided into 6 Groups depending on experience and previous performance. In the novices Group, the player with relatively the most experience, Rania Gomaa came out on top with 5 wins out of 5 although she was made to work hard by Rhys Keown. Second place went to Amaline Batty in her second tournament who won 4 of her 5 matches. Jack Rowlands finished third only 2 points behind Amaline. Group 5 was very closely contested. Jack Taylor won all his games but 4 of them were by very narrow margins. Walid Anwar lost 8-11 to Jack and 10-11 to Clare Townsend but won his other 3 games to finish second just 3 points ahead of his sister Leena who also won 3 matches and Clare who was 2 points behind Leena. Peter Baker had a 100% record in group 4 although he was pushed very hard by Courtney Gilardoni, the highest placed girl in the competition, before winning 11-10. All Courtney's games were close but she eventually finished behind Liam Townsend (3rd) and Harry Douthwaite (2nd) who won 4 of his 5 games. Dewald Joubert finished fifth in Group 3 last time and did exceptionally well to win it this time round. Dewald's closest games were against Robin Gledhill and Ben Peach although Robin and Ben finished 4th and 6th. Sam Wilson won 4 of his games to finish second with Scott Jones 5 points behind in 3rd. Group 2 was reduced to 5 players owing to a late injury suffered by Rachel Pooley. Late entrant Richard Creer came out on top of a keenly contested Group despite losing 15-13 to Peter Naylor, Peter overcoming a 9-1 deficit in this game -quite remarkable. This performance was not quite enough to give Peter second place as he finished on the same points as Oscar Hill who came second because he had beaten Peter 15-10. Group 1 was also affected by injury with Josh Gardner having to pull out. So the remaining 4 players played 3 best of 3 matches. Chris Moore defeated Liam Dixon 2-1 and Patrick Fitzpatrick and Juan Corrin 2-0 although all of these games were exceptionally close. Patrick beat a very tired (from football) Liam 2-0 to finish second. IOMSRA very much appreciate the continued support of Skanco for Junior Squash. Ends
