New Special Constables Regulations

by isleofman.com 22nd October 2010
The Department of Home Affairs is introducing regulations to ensure Special Constables can claim an allowance for sick pay if injured while on police duties. The Isle of Man Special Constables (Amendment) Regulations 2010, laid before Tynwald this week, will provide Special Constables the right to claim an allowance from the Department if they experience a loss of earnings as a consequence of an injury or disease contracted while on duty. Home Affairs Minister Adrian Earnshaw MHK commented: ‘As far as the Department is aware there has not been any incident involving injury to a Special Constable that has prevented them working in their main employment. However, it is a positive move that the Department will have the ability to provide an allowance to Special Constables if they lose wages for their main employment following an injury sustained while undertaking police duties.’ The regulations that come into operation on November 1 follow similar allowances available in the UK. They include provisions for any sick pay allowance paid by the Department to be reduced by the equal amount of incapacity benefit or insurance money, if received. ENDS
