‘Crime’ Does Pay, (Sometimes) says Age Concern Isle of Man

by isleofman.com 27th October 2010
Fashion - be it an excess of decolletage or complete lack of taste - played a big part in this year’s Age Concern Isle of Man’s Jail and Bail event that has raised ?5,500. This year’s event saw 11 ‘criminals’ arrested and forced to raise ‘bail’ for the charity, with PCs Steve Stanley and Jenette Martin, together with Special Constable Paul Allison making the arrests then transporting the victims to Lord Street police station followed by Team Age Concern in a pursuit vehicle generously loaned by Barry Curran Motors. When arrested Douglas Councillor and fashionista Carol Malarkey went quietly, unlike her fuschia-pink shoes and maxi-cardigan, which didn’t. PDMS managing director Chris Gledhill was arrested for his back-breaking cow-rescuing exploits, while at Heron and Brearley Peter Whittaker’s assault with a deadly moustache, Matt Lewis’s disrespect for his superiors and Shaun McEntee’s status as a depressed and emotional Liverpool supporter were all deemed arrestable offences. Over at Sovereign Trust director Phil Dentith was charged for being a control freak and his colleague Frank Butler for his crime against fashion, namely deadly designer stubble. Environmental champion and Douglas Councillor Sara Hackman - the hoody from Hansard International – was arrested principally for wearing the offending garment at night; HSBC’s Ian Bush for lack of decorum - and trousers - in the kit room; Douglas MHK Bill Malarkey for wearing a shirt almost louder than his wife’s accessories in a Department of Social Care meeting, and IFG’s David Harris was placed in protective custody to save him from the advances of his female colleagues. Age Concern Isle of Man chief executive Penny Creighton MBE said: ‘This was my last Jail and Bail event as I shall be retiring at the end of the year. But it was probably the best Jail and Bail yet, thanks to the way everyone joined in so wholeheartedly and raised a tremendous amount of money for us. Thanks are also due to the great team at Age Concern Isle of Man for organising the event so well and to Isle of Man Constabulary for entering into the spirit of the occasion and allowing Steve Stanley, Jenette Martin and Paul Allison to put the “jail” into Jail and Bail.’ Ends
