Douglas Borough Council’s annual fireworks display will take place on Saturday November 6.
Council Leader David Christian said: ‘This year’s event promises to be more spectacular than ever, thanks to sponsorship from telecoms provider Sure and Alliance and Leicester International, together with the involvement of 3FM. Given these challenging economic times we are pleased to have secured support from the private sector for what is one of the town’s biggest and most popular community events which the Council was determined to hold as we believe a large-scale organised fireworks display not only offers the opportunity to witness some visually stunning effects but also – and more importantly - provides spectators the safest and most secure setting in which to enjoy the celebrations. To this end I also welcome the sponsorship of Alliance and Leicester International, representatives from which, in keeping with our “safety first” message, will be distributing glow sticks and inviting spectators to make a donation to the Mayoral charity appeal fund, which this year is in aid of Craig’s Heartstrong Foundation and Kemmyrk.’
There will also be a ‘Best Guy’ competition, judged by the Mayor of Douglas Councillor Ritchie McNicholl JP with representatives of Sure and 3FM, and prizes donated by Sure: a ?250 voucher for the winner and ?100 and ?50 vouchers for the runners-up. Entries are to be submitted on the night, Saturday November 6, on the Promenade footway opposite Broadway and can be accepted until 5.45 p.m.
Location of the fireworks display is Douglas beach opposite Clarence Terrace/The Esplanade. ‘Best Guy’ entries will be judged at approximately 5.45pm; the bonfire will be lit on the beach at 6pm in the area between the War Memorial and Broadway slip road and the fireworks display will start at 6.15pm and is expected to finish by 6.35pm. Catering outlets will be located in the vicinity of the War Memorial.
To facilitate the display there will be some short-term parking and pedestrian access suspensions. Douglas Promenade cycle way will be closed from 8am on November 6 until 10am on November 7. On November 6 parking will be prohibited on the sea side of the highway from opposite the Empress Hotel to the War Memorial between 5pm and 8pm; the southbound lane of Douglas Promenade will be closed from Broadway to the Gaiety Theatre slip road between 5.30pm and 7pm and the foreshore will be closed between the War Memorial and opposite the Empress Hotel steps between 11am and 8pm.
In the interests of safety spectators are requested not bring their own fireworks, including sparklers, or pets, onto the site.
