Trying hard and finally achieving are qualities that sum up two Onchan brothers with 11-year-old Jack Baggaley following in the footsteps of older brother Thomas and winning this year’s Alfie Gilmour Award for Endeavour which is sponsored by Manx Gas.
The Award is given annually to a pupil of Kewaigue School who is considered by his or her teachers to have shown outstanding all-round achievement. Last year it was Thomas, now 13, who won the award with Jack now making sure it stays in the family for another year. The brothers are now both pupils at Ballakermeen High School.
Now in its eighth year, the Award was introduced by Manx Gas in memory of Douglas Gas employee Alfie Gilmour who was a pupil at Kewaigue School.
“Alfie was someone who demonstrated commitment to his team and the company and it was appropriate to name the Award after him,” said Manx Gas sales and marketing director Gary Cregeen who presented Jack with the specially crafted trophy along with gift vouchers.
“Jack is a worthy winner as was his brother last year and Manx Gas is delighted it stays in the Baggaley family for another year,” he added.
Mrs Karen Norton, deputy head teacher of Kewaigue School, described Jack as a “super pupil” who set a great example to others in the school.
“He was always undaunted by whatever he was faced with doing in terms of academic work, had a really positive attitude and was a polite and helpful boy who helped whenever he could,” she added.
