Inspector Mark Britton of the Roads Policing Unit reminds drivers that at this time of year the nights turn cold and the road conditions alter people need to adapt their driving style. Also as the sun is low in the sky and can cause drivers issues. Whilst these words may sound like common sense it is apparent that people are still not taking notice of the prevailing weather conditions.
O How many people started their journey this morning not being able to see properly out of their windscreen?
O Did people allow their windows to clear before moving off?
O Did people drive as they normally would do?
It may sound like common sense but when the road is icy people are still driving as they normally would.
I would ask that all drivers do their bit and take notice of what is happening with the weather – it is relatively simple – be slow, be careful and make sure you don’t become a statistic. There have been a number of Road Traffic Collisions over the last two mornings which tend to suggest that people are not taking these simple precautions. It is my opinion that collisions would drops and disruption by having to close roads would also fall if people take heed of what is going on around them.
The DOI have a gritting program which caters for the major arterial routes and we will continue to work with them to ensure that this is at an appropriate level.
