Captain Chalks Up 16th Consecutive Parish Walk

by isleofman.com 10th November 2010
The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company’s Captain Dermot O’Toole has raised ?1,200 for charity after completing the Parish Walk for the 16th consecutive year. Each year Captain O’Toole donates the money raised via sponsorship for his 85-mile walk, along with a donation from the Company, to the Manx Foundation for the Physically Disabled. MFPD Manager Jan Jukes said: ‘The Foundation provides social care for adults from the age of 18 onwards who have physical disabilities. Our day care services are provided Monday to Friday and service users are transported into the Day Centre at Masham Court, where we provide a range of activities and entertainment as well as a delicious home-cooked meal. ‘The Foundation is one of the oldest charities in the Isle of Man and we currently find ourselves in the position of needing to replace various pieces of equipment. Our first priority is to improve the comfort of our service users by obtaining some new furniture and this most generous donation from Captain O’Toole will help us to buy chairs suitable for our day centre use, which will enhance our service users stay with us, providing seating with not only style but also comfort!’ Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Chief Executive Mark Woodward said: ‘For someone to complete the Parish Walk once is some achievement, but to do it 16 consecutive times really is quite remarkable. As always, his colleagues at the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company were quick to support their Captain in raising funds for such a worthwhile cause.’ ENDS
