Outbreak of Viral Gastroenteritis in Isle of Man

by isleofman.com 15th November 2010
There have been several reports of a viral disease causing vomiting and/or diarrhoea in the Isle of Man. The most likely cause is Norovirus, but virological identification has not yet been possible. The specific features of this strain of the virus are: Vomiting seems to be the predominant symptom, along with abdominal pain. Only some patients have had diarrhoea. Fever has also been noticed, especially in young children. The virus seems to be affecting children predominantly, although no age group is exempt and cases in adults has been seen. The vomiting seems to be short lasting; the majority of those affected recovering within 24 hours. Advice to members of the public and a reminder about general hygiene practices: If you/your child or anyone in your home has vomiting and /or diarrhoea: Please do not visit A & E at Noble’s, minor injuries at RDCH, your GP or a pharmacist. If you or the affected person needs medical advice, please contact your GP or MEDs by telephone and do not attend unless asked to do so. Ensure the affected person drinks fluids regularly; it may be necessary to have small sips of fluids frequently as large volumes may cause vomiting. Wait for 48 hours after all symptoms have stopped, before the person returns to work or school. The affected person continues to shed the virus for 48 hours after all the symptoms are resolved. Often outbreaks result from an affected person returning to work or school too early. Please do not let the affected person visit hospital or care home for at least 48 hours after the symptoms are resolved. Please follow good hygiene precautions at home, namely scrupulous hand washing, thorough cleaning of the vomit, using diluted bleach and cleaning toilet bowls with bleach etc. The virus is highly infectious and good hygiene, especially hand washing is essential to prevent other members of the household from picking up the virus.
