by isleofman.com 15th November 2010
Kevin Cartledge, Senior Manger at HSBC, sponsor of the event: “HSBC is delighted to be sponsoring the Sporting & Dining Club in 2011 and the year kicks off in fine style with three legends from the world of football. It will be an excellent evening with plenty of memories, especially for those of us that were lucky enough to see Jackie, Nobby and Gordon play”. John Wannenburgh of The Sporting & Dining Club: “These three players epitomise the very best in English football and we look forward to a terrific evening’s recollections by a trio of World Cup Winners”. 1966 English football’s finest moment came in 1966 when Sir Alf Ramsey’s ‘wingless wonders’ beat West Germany in the World Cup final at Wembley, and the country that had invented the beautiful game were crowned world champions in receiving the Jules Rimet trophy from Queen Elizabeth II. It was a match that has become part of the social, let alone sporting fabric of the whole nation and made heroes of the players who donned the famous white shirt. The final is still considered as one of the best ever played. Jack Charlton OBE "Big Jack", as he is affectionately known throughout the game of football, is a soccer legend. Outspoken, fearless in defence and no respecter of authority, Jack influenced the game in a career which spanned decades. A member of the England World Cup-winning team in 1966, he went to greater fame as Manager of the Republic of Ireland team in 1986. In 1988 he took Ireland to the European Championship Finals in Germany and the 1990 World Cup Finals in Italy where they were beaten by the home team after reaching the Quarter Finals, making it the most successful Republic of Ireland team ever. Jack was made a Freeman of Dublin in 1994 to honour the credit he had brought to the national side. He resigned in 1995 and now concentrates on his many after dinner engagements where he is reckoned to be one of the finest sporting raconteurs in the country. Nobby Stiles MBE Stiles played the majority of his club career for Manchester United, where he became renowned for his tough tackling and ball winning qualities. With the Red Devils, he won two League titles and the European Cup under manager Sir Matt Busby. Stiles is one of only three Englishmen, alongside Sir Bobby Charlton and Ian Callaghan, to have won both the FIFA World Cup and European Cup, however only Nobby Stiles and Sir Bobby Charlton actually played in both finals. Nobby played every minute of England's victorious 1966 FIFA World Cup campaign. Gordon Banks OBE For 10 years, Gordon Banks wasn't just England's goalkeeper. He was indisputably the best in the world. Perhaps the finest there has ever been. And although Gordon Banks was one of the greatest goalkeepers of his or any other generation, he will forever be remembered for his heroic part in England’s triumphant 1966 World Cup campaign that culminated in the famous 4-2 victory over West Germany. Four years later, he was still England’s number one as they headed to Mexico to defend their World Cup crown and produced the competition’s most iconic moment when he spectacularly kept out Pele’s header in the clash with Brazil in Guadalajara, a breathtaking effort which became known as the ‘Save of the Century’. The dinner will take place on Thursday 03 February 2011 at the Mount Murray Hotel & Country Club in Santon. For ticket availability, please contact John Wannenburgh on 07624 495749.
