Police are asking motorists to take extra care at the traffic lights in Glen Vine following reports of vehicles ‘jumping’ the red lights. Inspector Will Campbell from the Western Neighbourhood Policing Team said:
“It would appear that at peak times some motorists travelling from the West into Douglas through Glen Vine are becoming frustrated waiting behind vehicles turning right down Glen Darragh Road which, due to Westbound traffic, sometimes can’t turn until the lights turn red. Some drivers directly behind the turning vehicle are taking a risk by driving on through the red light. Given the close proximity to Marown School there are obvious road safety concerns and I would warn motorists that drivers deliberately contravening the red light are a danger to pedestrians, especially school children, and face prosecution if caught”.
Head Teacher of Marown School Carol Walsh said:
‘Parents and staff at Marown School are extremely concerned about the safety of children using the pedestrian crossing at the traffic lights in Glen Vine, whilst travelling to and from school. The very real fear is that someone will ‘jump’ the lights and hit a child using the crossing. I can therefore only reiterate all of Inspector Campbell’s comments, and urge drivers to be aware of the number of parents and children trying to cross the busy Peel to Douglas Road.
I would also urge all householders whose properties back on to the Peel to Douglas Road, to ensure foliage from their garden is not restricting the footpaths, forcing children and parents to walk in the road’
