King William’s College and Castle Rushen High School in Joint Combined Cadet Force Initiative

by isleofman.com 22nd November 2010
The collaborative work of the Island's southern secondary schools was evident on Sunday, 14 November, when a joint Combined Cadet Force took part in the Remembrance Service held in Castletown Square. Castle Rushen High School and King William's College cadets marched side by side congregating by the Garden of Remembrance in hushed silence to remember the men and women of the armed forces who lost their lives in the two world wars and most recently in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Combined Cadet Force is a Ministry of Defence sponsored youth organisation. Its aim is to provide a disciplined organisation in a school so that pupils may develop powers of leadership by means of training to promote the qualities of responsibility, self reliance, resourcefulness, endurance, perseverance, readiness, relationships, resilience, remembering, reasoning and reflectiveness. From September 2010 King William’s College extended a welcome to students from Castle Rushen High School to join their Combined Cadet Force. This was met with extreme enthusiasm by the CRHS student body. Students meet every Wednesday during term time from 4.30 - 6.00 pm at King William's College, learning key transferable skills and, most importantly, promoting a feeling of personal achievement. The cadets also take part in training exercises both on and off the Island over the course of the academic year. Hilary Morton, Contingent Commander commented, 'We are extremely happy that we have been able to open up our CCF to Castle Rushen pupils in this joint initiative. Cadets from both schools are getting to know each other and are working and interacting well together. Although this partnership is fairly new we look forward to it going from strength to strength’. - ends -
