The Scottish Widows Isle of Man National Primary School Tag Rugby Finals were held in the Sports Hall at the NSC. There were 9 teams in the Finals; Buchan “A”, Buchan “B”, St. John’s, Kewaigue, St Mary’s, Ree Gorree “A”, Ree Gorree “B”, Ballacottier and Victoria Road.
The format for the tournaments was 3 pools of 3 teams, with the winner from each pool and the best runner up from all the pools progressing to the semi-finals. The standard of Rugby played throughout the day was of a really high standard and this was on show right from the start of the pool games. All of the teams were very close in standard and anyone coming in half way through the tournament would have had a very hard time trying to identify which teams were playing in the semi-finals and which teams were playing for the 7th – 9th places.
After a very good pool round the three pool winners were placed in the semi-final places, the best runner up spot was not as easy to put in with two teams tied. A play-off game was required to separate the teams in contention for the other semi-final place, this game was between Ballacottier and Buchan “B”, with Buchan “B” ending up the winners. The Semi-Finalists were Buchan “A” v Ree Gorree “B” and Victoria Road v Buchan “B”.
The semi-finals were very close and exciting games, with the Vic Road v Buchan “B” game not only going to extra time but it also had to go to Golden try, with Vic Road being the winners and going through to the finals. The other game was also close with Ree Gorree making it through to the finals. All four teams could have won and it is a credit to all the players and coaches that the standard of play was so high.
The Final between Vic Road and Ree Gorree “B” was a great game of Rugby with both teams giving their all to be the winner. It was end to end Rugby the lead changing hands several times. The winners with a 6-4 score line were Ree Gorree “B”, winning the Scottish Widows Isle of Man National Primary School Tag Rugby Trophy and the opportunity to now go away and play in the English National Primary
School Tag Rugby Tournament held at Rugby School, the home of Rugby. This will be played in July and the top 20 Schools from across the Country will be playing for the coveted title of National Primary School Champions and the opportunity to play at Twickenham before one of England Autumn Investec International Games, being the guests of England Rugby for the whole day.
Ian Williams, the Rugby Development Officer for the Isle of Man, Said, “ I am always impressed by the standard of Rugby played at this event but this year it was really very good and this is all down to the excellent work that all the Coaches have put in leading up to this event and how much the players enjoy playing the game. The smiles on all of the player’s faces is a joy to see and the way the game is played is a credit to everyone involved”.
