Police Officers from the Safer Schools Team within the Southern Neighbourhood Policing Team were joined recently by their Colleagues and partners from the Vehicle Testing Centre and the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IOM Branch) on a visit to the 6th Form Students at Castle Rushen High School.
The Students were given a valuable insight into how and why the Police run the various safety campaigns and what they should do if they were stopped whilst driving a motor vehicle.
During the visit, Tony Bode from the Vehicle Testing Centre also showed the students how to ensure that their vehicles were safe for use on the road.
The pupils were also able to speak to a member of the local branch of the Institute of Advanced Motorists to discuss safer driving techniques and sign up for an advanced driving course.
Sgt Rosie Hawes of the Southern Neighbourhood Policing Team said that the day was a very positive event with many of the students expressing a desire to sign up for further driver training on the Institute of Advanced Motorists advanced driving course. It is also hoped that visits of a similar nature will take place in the future in other Island schools.
Dr Ann Kennaugh, Deputy Head Teacher at Castle Rushen was really grateful to the police for their input and that the students had such a positive reaction to the sessions. They said “...that was really worth listening to, ....we learned how to make sure our cars were roadworthy and what to check, which was especially helpful for us as new drivers.”
