An opportunity has arisen to play an important role in the process that deals with complaints about healthcare provision in the Isle of Man.
The Council of Ministers is currently seeking to recruit a suitable person to serve on the Health Services Independent Review Body – established to provide an impartial assessment of how complaints are handled.
While no formal qualifications are required, a good standard of education is essential, along with senior management experience gained in the private, public or third sector. Candidates must also have the ability to analyse and review complex and highly emotive issues.
In the Isle of Man, individuals who are dissatisfied with the treatment or service they receive from any part of the Health Service are entitled to make a complaint. This is subsequently investigated by the relevant organisation – such as a hospital or GP practice – as appropriate.
If, on completion of that investigation, the complainant is unhappy with the outcome, they may refer the matter to the Independent Review Body and seek a review of the handling of the complaint.
The Review Body consists of six members appointed by the Council of Ministers for a period of five years. Anybody interested in the vacant post should submit an application by January 6, 2011.
