If you want a Christmas tree with a difference, crafted by the ingenuity and skills of the WI, then you should not miss the auction of thirty two of them next weekend. Razzle Dazzle is the final event of the WI's Diamond Jubilee Year, when institutes have been challenged to produce the sparkliest tree. A spokesman said, "Although the original idea was to pile on lots of glitz and bling to echo the diamond theme, I know lots of institutes have been busy making the most impressive crafty decorations." The trees will be judged by Alex Brindley from Manx Radio and the Ugly Sisters from the pantomime "Cinderella, who will also open the event in the Wurlitzer Room in the Villa Marina arcade at 10 am on Saturday, 11th December. It will run till 4.00 pm on Sunday 12th December, when the trees will be auctioned by the Hon. Noel Cringle.
There is no charge for admission, but donations are invited, with proceeds being split between the WI and the Gaiety's Restoration Fund.
"The staff at the Gaiety have been so helpful to us during the organisation of both this event and Ann Widdecombe's visit that we hope to help their tile appeal." Donations can be posted into a specially constructed post-box supplied by the Isle of Man Post Office.
Other attractions include the Ballabeg Bellringers and carols at 2.00 pm on the Sunday and the fabulous ice cave, made from white plastic bags!
WI knitters have been busy cutting and making "plarn", a fringed yarn, which has then been knitted on very large needles to make strips. These are now being joined together by Peel City WI's President, Myra Gilbert, who designed the cave. If you can't imagine how that works, then go along to the Villa Arcade next weekend to see for yourself. "We can guarantee you will be amazed!"
