SS Ellan Vannin Tragedy Remembered

by isleofman.com 6th December 2010
More than 80 people gathered at Ramsey quayside on Friday December 3 to attend a service commemorating the 101st anniversary of the sinking of the SS Ellan Vannin with the loss of all on board. The service, conducted by Canon David Greenwood of St Paul’s Church, Ramsey and held at the behest of Harry Edmondson who organised a centenary service on the Mersey last year, saw Ramsey MHK and Treasury Minister Anne Craine lay a wreath on the memorial plinth on East Quay erected by the Manx Heritage Foundation on the 90th anniversary of the tragedy and read out the names of all those who lost their lives in the early hours of December 3, 1909. Ramsey Town Commissioners’ chairman Captain Nigel Malpass attended the service for which music was provided by Ramsey Town Band. He was joined by Ramsey MHK and Economic Development Minister Allan Bell and representatives from Ramsey lifeboat station, Isle of Man Coastguard, the Steam Packet and descendants of those who died in the tragedy.
